Overview

The University of Phayao implements systematic waste management and sustainable consumption practices, covering the full cycle from waste reduction at the source to waste-to-energy conversion.

Policies and Plans

  • UP Waste Management Policy: a systematic waste management policy.
  • Paperless University: reducing paper use across administrative systems.
  • Say No to Single Use Plastics: campaign to eliminate single-use plastics.

Implementation

Waste Management

  • Recycling Programs: waste separation and recycling systems.
  • Waste to Energy (Bio-gas): converting organic waste into biogas for energy production.
  • Sewage Treatment: wastewater treatment system before discharge.
  • Hazardous Waste Management: proper handling of laboratory hazardous waste.
  • Electrical Waste Management: proper disposal and recycling of electronic waste.
  • UP Waste Track: a digital system for tracking hazardous waste. (labsafety.up.ac.th/wastetrack/login.php)

Zero Waste Campus

  • "Fak Fa Ma Kab Chan" Project (CESM + UPSR): collecting plastic bottle caps from students and staff to recycle into 100% recycled clothes hangers, which are distributed to underserved communities. A total of 1,727 hangers have been produced as of December 2025. (source
