Sustainable Development Goal 17 of 17

Overview

The University of Phayao is actively committed to biodiversity conservation and terrestrial ecosystem management, encompassing the preservation of green areas on campus, plant and animal genetic research, and the Royal Initiative Plant Genetic Conservation Project (RSPG). The university previously ranked 2nd in Thailand in the THE Impact Rankings for SDG 15 in 2020.

Policies and Plans

  • Nature Positive Action Plan: Refrain – Reduce – Restore – Renew.
  • Green Area Policy: conserving green spaces and ecosystems within the university.

Implementation

Green Areas on Campus

  • Forested Vegetation Area: natural forest areas within the university.
  • Planted Vegetation Area: planted gardens and demonstration plots, managed by the Facilities Division. (source)
  • Water Absorption Areas: natural zones for water absorption.
  • Ornamental plant propagation project and native plant species conservation. (source)

Actions for Nature

  • Zero Waste Campus: reducing pollution that impacts ecosystems.
  • Canal Bio-remediation: restoring aquatic ecosystems in campus waterways.

Royal Initiative Plant Genetic Conservation Project (RSPG–UP / อพ.สธ.–มพ.)

  • The University of Phayao is one of 9 C-RSPG network members under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), driving plant genetic conservation in Upper Northern Thailand. (source)
  • RSPG–UP Coordinating Center is operated under the Institute of Innovation and Technology Transfer. (source | source)
  • Research on conservation and utilization of Phayao GI Lychee and genetic preservation of Thai peacocks using biomolecular techniques. (source)
  • A master plan development meeting for RSPG–UP was held on 25 April 2024, led by the Vice President for Research and Innovation. (source)

Biodiversity Research

  • The School of Agriculture and Natural Resources conducts research on agro-ecology and local plant variety diversity.
